Amanda Brugel

Pointe Claire resides in a sleepy part of Montreal Island called West Island. Many people who don't know about the place mistakenly think that the West Island extends westward from Montreal. Actually it is it is the West Island includes everything westward of that city Lachine. Amanda Brugel was born there, but her time in the city wasn't long. Brugel was raised in Courtice near Oshawa Ontario. She aspired to be professional, however due to a rapid growth spurt she outgrew every dance partner she met. In an interview with Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels I am 6 feet, 1 inch." The moment I outgrew my male counterpart and stopped dancing, I quit. Some former dancers switch into acting. In Brugel's case it was the nudge of a high school drama teacher that pushed her in the right direction. The teacher was the one who advised her to audition to play the character of Anne for their school's annual production. After trying out, she ended up as the lead actress in Anne of Green Gables. The show was granted the Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to go to York University's Theatre Program which she completed from the program in 2000, earning a Bachelor's of Fine Arts. Over the last 20 years, Brugel's work has been featured on both the small and large screen. Her work gained most attention when she won her part as Rita in the acclaimed television show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel is the only Canadian actor on the show in Season 1 and was only seen on occasion.
